Eragrostis spectabilis

Purple lovegrass

Eragrostis spectabilis is a grass native across the southeast, naturally found in dry open woodlands. It grows best in full sun, and on soils that are dry to occasionally moist. It is drought tolerant. This grass has showy small pinkish-purple seed heads that mature in the late summer to create an overall appearance of a purple haze above the grass (hence the common name of Purple lovegrass). It is fairly resistant to deer. It grows to be around one foot tall, and provides cover for wildlife. The seeds are also eaten by birds in the fall. Eragrostis spectabilis is an excellent specimen plant in a yard, rain garden, green roof, or any other dry landscaping location.
