Ceanothus americanus

New Jersey tea

Ceanothus americanus is a low-growing native shrub that is found throughout the southeast. It naturally occurs in dry open woodlands, along edges, and in meadows. It is best cultivated in moist to dry, well drained soils, and in full sun or part shade. It produces clusters of white flowers in the early summer that are incredibly popular with pollinators, including some specialized bees. The fruits produced later attract songbirds. The leaves can be dried and used as a tea, giving it the common name of New Jersey tea. The showy white flowers of Ceanothus americanus make it great for a garden, and its deep root system means it works very well in restoration projects.
