Nelumbo lutea

Nelumbo lutea is a pond plant native throughout the southeast. It is a rooted aquatic plant which grows submerged in water, and often spreads to grow in wet soils around the water’s edge. It can grow up to six feet tall; it has showy, large, yellow to white flowers that bloom in the late summer. The interesting seed heads persist through the winter. This plant spreads through rhizomes, and readily forms colonies. The large floating leaves provide a resting place for flying insects, and shelter for pond life. Nelumbo lutea is a good specimen plant for ponds and deep water areas.
