Swida amomum

Silky dogwood

Swida amomum is a native shrub that occurs throughout the southeast in wetland habitats. It likes to be cultivated in wet soils, but can grow in full sun or shade. It is multi-stemmed, and has draping branches that will often root into the soil, which make it a great plant to use in stream restoration projects. It has small white flowers in late spring, and blue berries in summer. The berries attract birds, and also feed mammals of all sizes (from chipmunks to bears). Swida amomum is excellent for restoration projects and erosion control, and also works well in rain gardens.
