Ulmus alata

Winged elm

Ulmus alata is an early successional tree native to moist to dry forests across the southeast. It prefers to grow in full sun or part shade. The smaller branches of this tree have distinct ridges or “wings” of bark (hence the common name of Winged Elm). This is an important host plant for several native butterfly species. Songbirds and small mammals eat the seeds produced. Ulmus alata is a great tree for restoration projects.
