Tilia americana

Basswood

Tilia americana is a tree native across the southeast, frequently found on rich, moist to dry slopes. It grows best in full sun to part shade. It produces showy, drooping clusters of creamy yellow flowers in the late spring that are very attractive to pollinators. Seeds from these flowers attract songbirds. This is an important host plant for several native butterfly species. Tilia americana is great as a showy native along a street or in a rain garden, and can also be used in restoration projects.
