Quercus nigra

Water oak

Quercus nigra is a native oak that occurs predominantly in bottomland coastal plain forests, although it is found in the piedmont as well. It prefers to grow in moist to wet soils, but can tolerate drier sites. Quercus nigra would work well in restoration projects or as a street tree. Oak acorns are an important food source for much of our wildlife, and oak trees serve as important hosts to much of our butterfly, pollinator, and insect life.
