Physostegia virginiana

Obedient plant

Physostegia virginiana is a flowering plant native across the southeast, typically found naturally in moist to wet sites (along streams and in ditches). It grows best in full sun to part shade. It can get up to four feet tall in the growing season and dies back almost completely in the winter. Leaving dormant stems provides necessary over-wintering habitat for pollinators. Pale pink/purple flowers bloom in the summer and attract many pollinators, including hummingbirds. Physostegia virginiana works well as a specimen plant in a yard or rain garden, or to use in stormwater plantings.
