Carex lurida

Shallow sedge

Carex lurida is a clumping sedge that has cascading grass-like foliage, forming spiky seed heads in the late spring. It is widespread throughout the southeast, and prefers wetland habitats. This plant is tough, and has green foliage throughout the year (although it is more robust during the growing season). It prefers full sun, but can tolerate some shade. Like any of our Carex species, Carex lurida works well in several different applications: wetland mitigation, stream restoration, constructed wetland, or as a rain garden plant.
