Aesculus sylvatica

Painted buckeye

Aesculus sylvatica is a small understory tree native, and predominantly endemic to, the southeastern piedmont (it does occur somewhat in the coastal plain, and very rarely in the mountains). It prefers to grow in rich, moist, well-drained soils, in shade or part shade. Aesculus sylvatica has showy yellow-green flowers that bloom in the early spring (occasionally the flowers are orangish red). It works well for restoration projects, or as a specimen tree in a yard or rain garden. Both the flowers and fruits of buckeye trees are important to our wildlife and insect pollinators.
