Vaccinium corymbosum

Highbush blueberry

Vaccinium corymbosum is a native shrub; in the southeast it is found in high elevation wetland sites, primarily restricted to the Appalachian mountains. It needs wet soils to do well, and will grow in full sun to part shade (but fruits best with the most sunlight). In the spring, white bell shaped flowers bloom and attract several specialized pollinators. In the summer, blue fruits ripen and are enjoyed by humans and all kinds of wildlife (from songbirds to bears). This shrub is an important host plant for several native butterfly species. The leaves turn a beautiful red-orange color in the fall. Vaccinium corymbosum is excellent as a specimen plant for a yard, or to use in restoration plantings.
