Spiraea tomentosa

Hardhack

Spiraea tomentosa is a shrub native to the southeast, though largely absent from the southernmost states. It is naturally found in wetland sites, and prefers soils that are moist to wet. It grows best in full sun. It produces showy clusters of small pinkish purple flowers in summer that attract many butterflies and other pollinators. This plant will spread by suckers and produce colonies, so it is well suited to grow as a hedge. Spiraea tomentosa works well as a specimen planting in a yard or rain garden, or for restoration projects.
