Magnolia virginiana

Sweetbay magnolia

Magnolia virginiana is a small native tree, found primarily in the coastal plain. It naturally occurs in wetland habitats, and grows best in sites with wet soils. It is evergreen with thick glossy leaves, so it makes a good choice for a screen. It produces white flowers in the late spring that attract many pollinators, and red seeds later in the year that are eaten by songbirds and small mammals. It is also a host plant for several native butterfly species. Magnolia virginiana is great for planting in a yard or along a street, and it also works well for restoration projects.
