Hamamelis virginiana

Witch hazel

Hamamelis virginiana is a small understory tree native throughout the southeast. It is found in moist to moderately dry forests. It grows in full sun to part shade, and prefers moist soils but will tolerate drier sites. It is intolerant of drought, but does okay with occasional flooding. This tree produces unique early-winter flowers that are yellow with several thin, curly petals. The flowers are pollinated by noctuid moths. The fruits are eaten by birds and small mammals. Hamamelis virginiana is an excellent specimen tree for a yard or rain garden, and works well in restoration projects.
