Chasmanthium latifolium

River oats

Chasmanthium latifolium is a grass native throughout the southeast. It naturally occurs close to water but not in wet soil, and in full sun or shade. It grows vigorously when cultivated and separates well, making it a good plant for restoration projects. It has cascading oat-like seed heads that make it an attractive plant for a garden or green roof. Chasmanthium latifolium is an important host to several native butterflies, and birds and small mammals eat the seeds. It is fairly deer resistant.
