Carpinus caroliniana

American hornbeam

Carpinus caroliniana is an understory tree native to the southeastern U.S. It is naturally found in moist woodlands, often on streambanks. It grows in deep to partial shade, and prefers moist soils but can tolerate wetter sites. One common name for this tree is Musclewood, which refers to the rippled trunk of mature trees. Carpinus caroliniana is an excellent tree for stream restoration projects or as a street tree. It is a host plant for several native butterflies, and the seeds and fruits are eaten by a wide array of wildlife (from songbirds to foxes).
