Salix nigra

Black willow

Salix nigra is a native tree found in wetland sites throughout the southeast. It needs wet soils to grow well, but can tolerate any light condition (from full sun to deep shade; although it is happiest with some sun). It has small inconspicuous flowers which bloom in the spring and attract several specialized pollinators. This plant is also an important host for several native butterfly species. Salix nigra works well for stream restoration projects and erosion control.
