Celtis occidentalis

Hackberry

Celtis occidentalis is a large tree native across the southeast, although less frequent in the southern coastal plain. It is typically found in moist to dry woodlands, and grows best in moist well drained soils. It can tolerate drought once established. It prefers to be in the full sun, but will grow in partial shade. The characteristic warty bark is an easy way to identify Celtis species. Celtis occidentalis is a host for several native butterfly species, and its reddish purple fruits are eaten by birds and small mammals. It works well as a tree for restoration projects.
