Bolboschoenus robustus

Salt marsh bulrush

Bolboschoenus robustus is a sedge native along the coastal plain. It occurs naturally in brackish-saline marshes. It grows best in full sun, and in soils that are wet to permanently under shallow water. It can grow up to four feet tall. It dies back almost completely in the winter, but dormant stems can be left to provide necessary over-wintering habitat for pollinators. It is a food source for birds of all sizes, and provides good nesting habitat. Bolboschoenus robustus is an excellent plant for restoration projects and erosion control.
