Schoenoplectus pungens

Common three square

Schoenoplectus pungens is a tall sedge native throughout the southeast. It occurs naturally in wetland habitats, and is salt tolerant. It grows best in full sun, and in soils that are wet to permanently under shallow water. It can grow up to six feet tall, and produces small lateral clusters of seeds in the fall. It is a food source for birds of all sizes, and provides good nesting habitat. It dies back almost completely in the winter, but dormant stems can be left to provide necessary over-wintering habitat for pollinators. Schoenoplectus pungens is an excellent plant for restoration projects and erosion control.
