Sambucus canadensis

Elderberry

Sambucus canadensis is a shrub native across the southeast and found in a wide array of conditions. It prefers moist, rich soils, but will grow in drier or wetter conditions. It grows best in sun to part shade. It has large arrays of small white flowers that bloom in the late spring and attract many pollinators. Dark purple fruits ripen in the late summer and are enjoyed by humans, songbirds, and small mammals. Sambucus canadensis works well as a specimen tree in a yard or rain garden, or for restoration projects.
