Salix caroliniana

Carolina willow

Salix caroliniana is a small willow tree, native throughout the southeast but occurring predominantly in wetland coastal plain sites. It prefers wet soils, but can grow anywhere from full sun to deep shade. Small clusters of yellow flowers bloom in the spring and attract many pollinators. This is an important host plant for several species of native butterfly, and the only native host plant for Viceroy butterflies. Salix caroliniana works well in restoration projects.
