Quercus lyrata

Overcup oak

Quercus lyrata is an oak native to the southeastern coastal plain, although it does occur somewhat in the piedmont. It is found naturally in seasonally flooded habitats, and likes to grow in wet soils. It is distinguishable from other oaks by its acorns, which are almost entirely enclosed by the cup (hence the common name Overcup oak). Quercus lyrata works well for restoration projects in wet sites, or as a street tree. Oak acorns are an important food source for much of our wildlife, and oak trees serve as important hosts to much of our butterfly, pollinator, and insect life.
