Iris virginica

Southern blue flag

Iris virginica is a flowering plant native to the southeastern coastal plain and piedmont. It predominantly occurs in wetland habitats. It grows well in full sun to part shade sites, with moist to saturated soils. It has evergreen blades that grow up to three feet tall. Showy bluish-purple flowers bloom in the spring and attract pollinators. Iris virginica is a great specimen plant for a yard or rain garden, and it also works well for restoration and pond plantings.
