Hibiscus coccineus

Scarlet rose mallow

Hibiscus coccineus is a tall showy plant. It is native to the southeast along the coast, but is often found cultivated throughout the region. This species can reach up to eight feet tall during the growing season, and has large red flowers that bloom in the summer. These flowers attract hummingbirds, butterflies, and other pollinators. It becomes fully dormant in the winter, but if the dead stalks are left in place they become excellent over-winter pollinator habitat. Hibiscus coccineus plants like to be in wet, full sun areas. It has a slight salt tolerance. It is great for stormwater plantings, wetland mitigation, or as a specimen plant in a rain garden.
