Euonymus americanus

Strawberry bush

Euonymus americanus is a shrub native to the southeast. It is naturally found in moist forests throughout the region, and is recognizable by its deep green “wiry” stem, and unique autumn fruits that consist of a fuchsia-colored seed capsule which opens to expose bright red/orange seeds. It will grow in any light level, from full shade to full sun, and can tolerate both wet and dry soils. The seeds of Euonymus americanus are eaten by songbirds, turkeys, and small mammals. This shrub works well for restoration projects, or as a showy plant in a yard or rain garden.
