Chionanthus virginicus

Fringe tree

Chionanthus virginicus is a small native tree that is common throughout the southeast. It is found in a wide range of habitats- from dry rock outcrops to coastal plain swamps. Its showy and fragrant spring flowers make it widely cultivated. When growing as a specimen plant in a yard or rain garden, it does best in rich, well-drained soil in the full sun. However, Chionanthus virginicus also works well for restoration projects and can tolerate poor dry soils, as well as part-shade. Pollinators are drawn to the flowers, and the small fruits produced later in the year attract songbirds and small mammals.
