Amelanchier canadensis

Serviceberry

Amelanchier canadensis is a small tree native to the southeast, predominantly in the coastal plain. It prefers to grow in moist, well drained soils with afternoon shade, but it is adaptable to a wide array of conditions. In the spring it produces white, fragrant, radial flowers that are characteristic of the rose family. The flowers turn into berries as the season progresses. This impressive bloom makes Amelanchier canadensis popular as a garden plant, while its ability to grow in various settings makes it well suited for restoration projects. The flowers of this tree are a big draw for pollinators in the spring, and the berries that come later attract small mammals and song birds.
