Saururus cernuus

Lizard’s tail

Saururus cernuus is a native plant that is widespread throughout the southeast. It is found mostly in wetland habitats, including brackish marshes. It grows best in soils that are wet and occasionally (or permanently) submerged in water, and in full sun to part shade. It has heart shaped leaves and grows up to three feet. It dies back almost completely in the winter. Showy, drooping, white flowers are produced in the late spring that have a citrusy aroma (and are shaped vaguely like tails, hence the common name of Lizard’s tail). These flowers attract pollinators. Saururus cernuus works well for restoration projects and pond plantings, or as a specimen plant in a wet yard.
